The National Coaching Foundation trading as Sports Coach UK is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status (No 327354), employing around 50 staff based at their HQ in Leeds and at sites across England and Scotland. It has a wholly owned commercial trading subsidiary, Coachwise Limited, which is responsible for the administration of membership and workshops developed by Sports Coach UK in furtherance of its charitable purpose.
Our Future
Sports Coach UK will achieve their mission by retaining and recruiting credible and passionate specialists who thrive on leading and driving innovation. Following the appointment of a new Chair (Gillian Wilmot) and Chief Executive Officer (Mark Gannon), the Board now wishes to appoint up to four new Trustees. Together with the existing Board and Executive the new Trustees will support the organisation across a wide range of areas including:
Insight and thought leadership
Sports Coach UK will seek out and use evidenced best practice across a range of sectors, both from the UK and internationally, enabling them to lead the debate on coaching and coaches.
Communications
Sports Coach UK will drive a national debate around the power of coaching to change lives and drive societal benefits.
Brand
Sports Coach UK will be synonymous with coaching excellence across all forms of coaching at all levels, display sector leadership and leverage public funds to amplify the reach and impact of coaching.
Corporate structure, systems and processes
Sports Coach UK will ensure they are efficient, effective, flexible and agile in their delivery of customer-centric services and solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Governance and Strategic Leadership
Trustees will lead, support and challenge the organisation to ensure the highest levels of governance are achieved.
Using their sector and functional expertise, Trustees will provide guidance and influence to the Executive on specific areas of strategic importance.
Stakeholder Relations
Trustees will support the Vision, Mission and Purpose by enhancing existing relationships and forging new partnerships.
They will use their network and influence to position coaching with regards to contemporary challenges facing sport and physical activity.
Ambassadorial
Trustees will be ambassadors for the organisation with a range of stakeholders.
They will assist in effectively communicating the Vision, Mission and Purpose.
Commitments
Trustees will be appointed for an initial three year term (renewable).
Time commitment will be 6-8 days per year, including four Board meetings, committee meetings, conferences and ambassadorial engagements.
The role is non-remunerated with all reasonable expenses being reimbursed.
Board meetings are usually held in central London in the late afternoon.
Skills & Experience Required
Essential:
Successful candidates will be passionate about coaching. They will have experience of working at Board level and be able to articulate how they would use their expertise to support Sports Coach UK.
Specific requirements include:
Essential
An informed interest in coaching and alignment with the Sports Coach UK vision to “transform lives through coaching”.
An understanding of one of the following sectors: Elite Coaching, Community Coaching, Commercial Partnerships, Building Participation or Health.
Strategic thinking skills and a proven track record of creating partnerships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
The ability to fully participate in four Board meetings a year, associated committees and ambassadorial engagements.
An understanding of Trustee duties and the ability to operate as an effective Trustee.
Desired:
Some understanding and knowledge of Charity Law.
Experience of chairing a committee (Sports Coach UK currently have three committees: Audit & Governance, Finance and Coaching).
